The hillside parish above Funchal, famous for coming back down in a wicker sledge.
The carros de cesto are wicker sledges on wooden runners. Two carreiros, dressed in white with straw hats, steer each one down the steep streets towards Livramento, braking with the rubber soles of their boots. It began in the nineteenth century as the fast way down to the city.
At the top stand the church of Nossa Senhora do Monte, where the last Emperor of Austria, Charles I, is buried, and the Monte Palace Tropical Garden.
A tipGo up by cable car in the morning and come down by sledge. On 15 August the whole parish celebrates its patron saint.
